Mixing It Up: #MultiCultiMixer
Memorable times were had at Mixed Up Clothing's #MultiCultiMixer. Sonia Smith-Kang and her crew definitely know how to mix up fun and education while celebrating cultural diversity. This event had a panel on raising multi racial/cultural children, an awesome mini fashion show and even a live read of the new children's book Mixed Me, by the author himself Taye Diggs.
Growing up multicultural myself and not having events like this in the forefront, I can say it was always a bit difficult to find my place in the world or even among my peers in school. I was never "Mexican enough", "creole enough" or "white enough" it was a very confusing place. I'm so happy my son is growing up in a time where people are ready to learn and celebrate every part of someone's bloodline. I am not just one race, and I am entitled to celebrate every part of my background freely and openly... It's a beautiful thing. Being around people who are making a difference in the world one panel at a time is even more exciting. The world needs this. And Sonia is starting the dialogue.
Taye Diggs has made another much needed mark in the world with his book, Mixed Me. Children at an impressionable age want to relate to their books, TV shows and role models. It really wasn't until recently where we begun to see more diverse casting in shows or mixed race families in movies or commercials. And let's not forget it came with quite the backlash. Remember that Cheerios commercial (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z01qH-jqGBY)? We have a long way to go. Mixed Me is celebrating those families. It is celebrating the child that is asked "why don't your parents match?".
My mom and dad say I'm a blend of dark and light. "We mixed you perfectly, and got you just right!"-Mixed Me
I can't thank Sonia and everyone involved enough for having me at this event and for making a difference. For taking a stand and saying "I can celebrate all of me and my diversity, and it's awesome!"
